Changing minecraft directory

I keep trying to change its directory to "G:\.minecraft" but It always says ready to download and play at the bottom of the launcher. when I click play it makes another .minecraft in appdata/roaming which I don't want. Ideas? I downloaded it to appdata but then I moved it to G:\ and now it keeps wanting to go back to appdata. Do I need to redownload it to my G drive?

Go to edit profile and the check mark Game Directory, then you should be able to change the games directory
