Widening the back side panel

Me and a friend are modding an old CTX case much like the one above (not our case). We want to find a way to make a bulge out the back side panel much like the Corsair Carbide Series 400R and 500R for cable room (pictured below)

 

Except, instead of this side, the reverse side panel

Just want to know how we should go about doing it.

It would require something like a bench brake to bend a piece of sheet of metal and then probably rivet it into place, but it won't be a seamless panel like a the corsair one you have pictured there. If you want a slightly cleaner look you could probably get a cheap side panel from a case that has a bulge in it and cut to to size and fit i over your current one before removing the original side panel material and riveting it on.

I was thinking if we are gonna do it we gotta do it right. And by that i mean create a custom sheet metal piece that has the bulge and actually weld it into place and then smooth out the weld. I have no idea if weldng will ruin the side panel or not but i guess thats why we ask questions first before jumping right in and ruining it

I haven't done welding before personally but reading upon it previously it can distort the panel due to the extreme heat so it need to be welded a little short sections at a time if you want to weld it on, as for material just make sure it's not a galvanized steel panel before welding since it can give off toxic fumes so it will it's a good idea to grind off the coating in areas where you will be welding. As for smoothing any low spots or uneven surfaces you can use some bondo for small spots.

We might do a build log, but we are still in the planning process.

you'll not really wanna weld on this type of side panels. just trying to TIG weld

a custom side panel and this imported steel can easily blow a hole (non-recover)

even with simple tacking. only thing i found semi-passable is using a spot weld

gun on the lowest setting and then after all that the grinding was pure torture.

 

look into polymer/epoxy glues. quasi-permanent, sandable and paintable.

bought a $6 400R side panel, cut out the bump and bonded that to a CM690

side panel in piano black. only had three pinholes in the filler.
