Media Storage w/ Backup Solution?

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I've currently got a 1TB Hard Drive but it's out of space. Since I can't install any more additional hard drives in my rig, I've decided to purchase a separate device that I can access wirelessly on my iPhone and access the files if that's possible, but a wired connection to my PC is what I'm looking for. It doesn't have to be extremely portable but I want to have at least 4-8TB worth of space. I'm willing to spend around $300 USD on this, and I'll be using it to backup important files and media storage to watch movies that I download.

Could someone give me some advice on what I should get to satisfy my needs?

Hey Accurian,

What you are referring to would be a NAS (Network Attached Storage). It is basically a hard drive (or a set of hard drives), connected to your router and allowing you access to all the files on that storage over the network. I could suggest checking out WD My Cloud and WD My Cloud Mirror as both would give you the opportunity to back files up to them as well as share data on multiple devices over the network and internet. One is a single-bay NAS, the other has 2 bays and offers RAID1, RAID0 and JBOD support for either redundancy or speed boost. Here's some more info if you'd like to check it out:

Would this Seagate Backup Plus 8TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive do what you want?  It's $300 USD.  Then use CrashPlan to backup your system and this portable drive.

Can I treat it as an external hard drive or am I forced to use it as a backup device only?

Thanks for the informative reply along with some great suggestions! After a little bit of research after posting this thread, I realized a NAS would be most appropriate for storage, backup and even streaming.
