Hello all,

I'm about to buy an SSD instead of my HDD. I'm still a noob at this, and I'm not sure if I have to reinstall windows or not. Right now Windows is running on my HDD obviously, so will I have to do some special stuff or not?

Thanks

You could technically clone the HDD, but I would personally reinstall as it's good to periodically do a fresh install anyway.

you should just copy as much of your existing drive over to the ssd and leave whatever files you can't fit on you hdd...

not entirely sure why someone should do a fresh instal; someone want to enlighten me here :)

Well I did a fresh install of Windows about 1 month ago, and I don't want to go thru that whole process again..

Windows slows down over time, crap builds up, etc...

Just wondering, I have really slow internet, is it possible to transfer my downloaded games from Origin and Steam?

Steam yes, origin I don't think so.  I remember having to always download it over.  For steam, you just copy the steamapps folder, reinstall steam where you want, then copy the steamapps folder into steam(replace the new one), and restart steam.  For origin, you will have to copy the install folder of the games, reinstall origin, then start the download for teh games, pause it once it starts, close origin, copy the games folder to overwrite the new one, then restart origin.  This method may or may not work, it has worked for some games for me, and not for others.

You don't have to do a fresh install, but it is reccomended when going from HDD to SSD.  Windows configures itself differently when installing on SSD vs HDD, and "moving" windows may result in it not configuring itself correctly.

Hey JorenBus,

It is recommended to do a fresh install of the OS as this way you would avoid any compatibility issues and transferring any potential errors. Moreover, it is recommended that if you are cloning a drive that the destination drive is of equal or larger size in order to avoid transferring any errors or corrupting and missing data during the process. A fresh install refreshes the system and is usually the better choice.

Thank you, I'll just transfer my most important documents, and for the rest I'll do a full clean install.

I will however try to copy my Steam and Origin games due to my slow download speed.
