Hey guys,

I'm working on getting a parts list together for my first build here and I just wanted to run the list past the forum and get some advice on the build and which parts to go with.

First and foremost, I'd like to try to keep the budged under $1100 if possible and it will be built in the States (Illinois to be precise).

The pc is definitely going to be a gaming design.  Although, it doesn't have to absolutely crush all games at 4k and ultra resolutions but I'd like to do some gaming at 1440p after picking up a new monitor (separate from the build budget).   As far as game choice goes, League of Legends is currently played the most but that's mostly to do with my current setup only having Intel's integrated graphics.  Space Engineers, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Battlefield are all top the wish i could play list but right now getting >30fps on most at the lowest quality is kind of discouraging.  Star Citizen will probably have more than a few hours spent on it as well.

I'll probably only run one gaming monitor and a secondary monitor for music, YouTube, twitch (only watching), etc.  I have a 1080p 60Hz monitor but I've already begun shopping for a 1440 display and would be open to suggestions. I would love to get that Ultra Wide curved LED monitor that Linus reviewed (LG 34UC97) but that isn't too likely since its kinda costly.

I already have a Logitech G502, a Siberia V2 Frost Blue and a keyboard.  I do however need to purchase an OS with this rig, I'm thinking Win7 Home Premium since I'm already very well acquainted and will upgrade to Win10, probably upon release.

So, onto the current parts list:

CPU- Intel i5-4690K

Reasoning: I don't think I'll really utilize the extra power from an i7 and plan on doing some light OCing after feeling comfortable with the final build

MoBo-  MSI Z97 SLI Plus

Reasoning:  Honestly, It was just kind of the first board I found that wasn't ungodly expensive for the Z97 chipset and my build has kind of taken on a blue theme to it and after watching reviews and comparisons haven't found any great reason to switch the MoBo choice yet

Case-  Corsair Obsidian 450d

Reasoning:  I started out thinking that any $50 case was going to be fine but was trying to keep the fan count up to help cooling (either with many fans on low for less noise, or 3/4 fans on high with other venting areas with positive case pressure).  I ended up really liking the minimalist design while still having a window and multiple dust filters (dust might be a bit of a problem with the dog in the house).  I also think this case provides a lot of room to grow into if i move towards water cooling and also have the ability to show off the build after adding led fans or w/e else to the inside.

GPU-  GTX 970  or  R9 290X

Reasoning:  I've gone back and forth with the graphics card selection and initially started out thinking a Gigabyte 960 but moved away from it b/c of the only 2GB vram.  So then I was thinking of the GTX 970 Windforce but realized there are more than a few 290X cards at comparable prices and they won't have the 3.5-4.0 GB difference in performance.  This is definitely the spot I think I'll need the most guidance.

PSU-  Corsair HX650

Reasoning:  I actually already have this from a friend and this kinda of started the whole idea of doing a custom build

SSD-  Kingston V300 Series 240GB

Reasoning:  I figured a 120 would be filled up pretty quick since I already have around 80 gigs of games from Steam.  No particular reason tho for the Kingston SSD, is just currently lower priced with still decent reviews on Newegg.

HDD- WD Blue 1TB Drive

Reasoning: Picked it up already since it was on sale for about $45

RAM-  HyperX Fury 2*4GB DDR3 1600

Reasoning:  Didn't seem overpriced and fit the unofficial blue theme of the build

CPU Cooler-  Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

Reasoning:  Seems like the go-to after market cooler for a cpu when sticking with air cooling. I'd like to use the Noctua NH-D15 but I can't seem to justify spending twice as much just of a little less noise. If it goes on sale for $75 then maybe.

Side note: I was also thinking of throwing in two Gelid blue 120mm fans in the front of the case to add some nice looks to the final build, but would much rather put the money in functional hardware before spending on nice looking fans.

Sorry for the story book of a post in advance and thanks for any help

Awesome, Thanks! I'll have to remember PCPartPicker in the future.  So other than going with one stick of ram and picking the Gigabyte GTX 970 you think it all seems reasonable?

i chose 1 stick of ram since you can upgrade to 16gb later and i chose the 970 from gigabyte since the 450d is a airflow oriented case that 970 has 3 fans on it so it goes well will the case, also it has a blue led since and it goes well with your build. Also i have the gigabyte 970 and it is a awesome card with great overclocking potencial

Ok, thanks for your help.  I think i just have one other question then, Is everyone just exaggerating the difference between the 970 running with <3.5 GB vram vs more? or does that actually seem like a noticeable difference and its something to think about before purchasing?

If you don't plan on going 4k surrond then the amount the 970 has should be more than enough.

Ok, I was only thinking the one screen.  Thanks for the confirmation.

Stick with 2 x 4GB Ram. You can still add another 2 x 4GB in the future.

Swap the Kingston V300 for something like a Crucial MX100 or Samsung 850 Evo.

Alright, I had just picked the Kingston almost blindly. Ill look into the Crucial and the Samsung. And i was thinking 16 GB of ram would be plenty for when I am doing at the max if I go with the 2 x 4GB, thanks for the insight
