Entertainment System issues

My uncle gave us his Samsung HT-ES6200 that he was going to, throw away... Anyway, the problem is that we can't get the TV audio to play through the system's speakers. It's connected through the TV's optical Out jack to the entertainment system's optical In jack on the hub, yet it won't play through the speakers. When it's connected through the optical cable the sound won't play through the TV speakers neither will it play through the systems speakers...

The settings are set to use the entertainment systems speakers rather than the TV's... I'm a complete noob when it comes to audio and need some help. The subwoofer isn't connected if that makes any difference (need to fit the connector)? I'm at a complete loss.

Could the problem be the subwoofer not being connected? Or is it something within the audio settings labeled as something that i most likely don't understand. There's a diagram just as an idea of what's connected to where: Thanks!

EDIT: The audio when playing something on the smart hub (netflix for example) comes through the system's speakers just fine, it's just when it's using the TV.
