So my brother's old 680 died on him last night and he obviously needs a new GPU. He said he doesn't care if it is AMD or NVidia, and his budget is around $125 USD. Any good deals recently. He doesn't do too heavy gaming, just what a 750 Ti could accomplish. Wait, I get a 750 Ti for him? It would seem like the best price to performance, but with 290X's being $230 and 780's being $280, it would seem like he could get more for his money.

I trip to make the fall shorter

The R9 280X is a great card, if he doesn't use any of the extra features that NVidia has for there cards. You might as well pick up a AMD card for better cheaper performance even if he he doesn't hardcore game. You could even pick up second hand a R9 290 if you find a great deal.
