DIY Speaker Builds?

I did some searching and didn't see anything pop up, has anyone here built their own speakers?

Its due time to replace my literally 20-ish year old 2.1 set that I have on my office computer, so I'm thinking about taking my Logitech Z623's from my workshop computer and putting them there and building a set for the workshop computer.

I found several forums talking about DIY audio, but I'm lazy and don't feel like joining them... was hoping to find someone on here who may be able to correct me if I'm going down the wrong road here. From everything I could find this was the best bang for the buck combo at around $350, I really don't want to spend more than that as I'm on my headphones 90% of the time. These are just going to be for when I'm doing some woodworking, working on my car, or having a party.

The plan is a set of Overnight Sensations https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/diy-overnightsensationswith a Cerberus for the sub along with a plate amp to drive the OS's http://www.rjbaudio.com/Cerberus/cerberus.html

But...your location says Nebraska. I find this paradox perplexing.... :o

Yup.  I build (my last build was a couple of years ago.)  The overnight sensations are very popular and have had a ton of sparkling reviews.  I'd say you are on the right path.

The biggest mistake someone getting into DIY speakers can make is doing it because they think they will save money doing so.  You sound like you already have wood working tools and some skills in using them... you are most of the way up the mountain already!

DIY speakers can be a very rewarding pursuit and my last pair replaced a $3500 pair of Martin Logans for a fraction of the price...  IF I don't count the cost of the equipment I bought to build them and IF I don't factor in 100+ hours of my time as an expense.

System: i5 6600K@3.6 GHz, Gigabyte Z170XP SLI, 2x8 Corsair DDR 3000, Corsair Hydro H60i cooler, Rosewill CAPSTONE 750w Gold PSU, 1x 512GB SSD, 1x 2TB 7200RPM, Windows 10 Pro x64
Display: XFX R9 390 DD, triple 1920x1200 24" HP monitors (5760x1200 @ 60Hz)   Sound: Audio-gd NFB-11 -> AKG K7XX or 2.1 speaker system

Well, its not like there is anything better to do here than drink all night.  :P

Good to hear another thumbs up on the Overnight Sensations, I don't really think I can go wrong with them from everything I've read.

Definitely not doing it to save money. I'm plenty happy with the quality of my Z623's for what I use them for and could just grab another set, but I enjoy projects and figured I may as well DIY. I have a CNC router and was going to use it for the enclosure, but then I found a kit of the components with a flatpack enclosure so I'll likely go that route to ease the learning process. After I get a bit of experience building the OS's I'll CNC the Cerberus woofer enclosure. The only tool I may end up needing is a biscuit joiner. I much prefer pocket screws, but they don't really work for a project like this. You can never go wrong buying more tools though lol.

Yeah!  That's what I said until my wife pointed out that somehow our two car garage had turned into a wood working shop with two table saws, multiple routers, more clamps than the local hardware store keep in stock, etc.  I STILL want a CNC though!  Be careful... DIY speakers can be HIGHLY addictive.   ;)

I'm lucky enough to have my own detached two car garage to myself, and an attached garage all for the wife so I don't take too much flak.

Haha, I know all too well how these things go. CNC machines are addictive as well, I bought a cheap engraving machine after building the router, then decided I wanted a CNC lathe andh ave that half converted atm, and recently decided I NEED a CNC Mill so that is currently in planning stages.

Multiple, and I enjoy building them almost more than listening to them ;p.

The Overnight Sensations are an excellent choice. Totally different than the Z623, but I'd pick them over the Logitechs all day every day.

With some good wood(finishing)work you can make them look like 500$ speakers :)

My favorite OS's:
