X99 or Z97?

Go to solution Solved by Najuno,

Money really isn't an object, so I kind of agree with you on that. Also, editing 30+ minute videos at least once a day is worth the extra money.

If you have the budget for it, it isn´t even worth to think to go with Z97 if you are doing video editing. Go for the 6 core X99 and you will benefit from the more cores and threads :) and for editing you can also see a difference between DDR3 and DDR4. The benefits are just not huge if you are doing gaming only, then I´d recommend X99 only if you are an enthusiast.

It depends how serious you are about it, a 4790k is still great for both, but obviously the 5820k will be superior to the 4790k in editing

The Core i7-5820K would be better for editing but personally I'd go with Z97 and the Core i7-4790K, cheaper motherboards generally and also you don't have to buy the hideously expensive DDR4 RAM.

Motherboard prices aren't really an issue, since I need the extra USB 3.0 and wifi of the ASUS deluxe boards either way. And I can spare an extra hundred bucks for the RAM.

Cool

How much do the extra 2 cores affect rendering times?

about a third less.

Also depends on your editing software I use Adobe elements and a 4790k with gtx 760 and 1080p 30fps and the export time is roughly the time of the vid give or take

Thanks, definitely gonna go with the 5820K now. Off-topic, but does using a faster storage device, like an M.2 SSD affect rendering times?

Cool

Not as much as the CPU. Enough RAM and Storage are a must have but the main load for video rendering lays on the CPU. And with X99 and the 5820K I´d say you hit an absolut sweet spot. Of course the 5960X is better because it has more cores and more threads. But the 6 cores and 12 threads have such an amazing price to performance ratio especially for redendering that I´d only recommend his big brother the 5960X if you do rendering for aliving and in a business where every minute counts.

The difference between the 4790K and the 5820K in terms of rendering is quite significant.
