My laptops's screen has stopped working. The laptop itself is fine (tried outputting to a monitor using HDMI and worked fine) but the screen just outputs white. It just randomly stopped working after I left it for about 10 mins and came back to see it broken. The model is an Acer Aspire 5542. I am pretty sure I will just have to get the screen replaced and I doubt there is very much I can do other than that, but any suggestions as to any possible fixes would be apperciated.

How old is the laptop? I know some people who have older laptops, and sometimes the screens get messed up because they're quite old. For instance I've seen a screen on an old Toshiba laptop that has a bunch of lines that go from top to bottom, 1 pixel wide that are either pink or yellow, some are pink, or yellow, not that I can't tell the colors apart, there are just 2 different colored lines. But anyways, it may just be a loose connector, or the screen could to totally messed up, and in that case it will need to be fully replaced. Depending on the price of the replacement, and the original price of the laptop you may be better off buying a new laptop.

Downloading programs from CNet is not a good idea, as they will commonly include unwanted, and sometimes dangerous bloatware... The more you know.

It is fairly old laptop, I think 4 years ish, and was about £400 to buy back then. It is not a particularly good laptop, and I would like another one but family members disagree and they think keeping this one would be a good idea although it is very bad at everything.

You should show them this maybe. It definitely needs an upgrade to something else. If you're looking to do anything like gaming, then it will need an upgrade. It WILL NOT be worth the fix because it would probably end you up in the £200+ range for the part(s) and then the labor. Best bet would be trying to convince them to let you get an upgrade.

I have my own rig for gaming so it not so much of an issue, but the laptop is just generally very slow and pretty awful to use. I have not looked for a replacement part yet and the cost of that but you may be right in that it would cost too much to consider and a new laptop would be best seeing as we could do with an upgrade anyway.

EDIT: £40 for a new screen from amazon so not that bad actually.

True, but what about getting it installed, unless you want to try it yourself.
