Upgrading my CPU

Go to solution Solved by hnknskywlkr,

Well everything was working great, until this morning I Shut down comp to install the RAM Heatsinks and when I try to turn on comp and nothing comes on screen, comp appears to boot up(all fans and hdd spin up and stay on) Ive tried a different vid card and nothing, any idea's?

EDIT* I switched around the Ram and It booted up fine

Hello, thank you for reading and any help

My computer has a

pegatron m2n68-la narra5-gl6 mother board

AMD Athlon II 170u single core processor @ 2.0 Ghz

2 x 2Gb ram 4Gb total

Zotac GT630 Synergy Edition

250W power supply

Win 7

This is the exact board here

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Narra5-GL6-513426-001-Motherboard-ASUS-M2N68-LA-skt-AM2-513426001-/151183612065

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Narra5-GL6-513426-001-Pegatron-M2N68-LA-HP-Compaq-513426001/151483241689?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3D1ca54300b4864ba7a758bad6ae1833cc%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D261542969226

Now according to some sites,it says the processor is an AM2 socket,But..

On this page its says "NOTE:Only socket AM2+ processors are supported with this motherboard."

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01701270&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N61

My board is the same as this site but green, does that make a difference?

But if I run "Speccy" or "CPU-Z" It tells me the processor is an AM3 socket under the CPU tab

th_specs_zpsusorp3ak.png

But under the MoBo tab it says SocketAM2

th_spec2_zpsnwm7xdvg.png

Also if I look on the board at the socket on the white plastic I see AM2

So which is it?

I want to upgrade to something with at least dual core running faster than 2.0Ghz

The only thing all have in common is the TDP: 95W

Will any of these be compatible?

I know I need to upgrade to power supply as well

Also,Will I have to do anything in the BIOS when upgrading?

Thank you in advance for any advice

Your board has an AM2+ Socket.

Both of those processors would work.  You definitely need to upgrade your power supply.

When upgrading your CPU, if at first the computer doesn't post, then you have to enable legacy boot.

Was your computer built by HP?

Compaq Presario CQ5000 series

How would Enable legacy boot?

Is that F9(set-up menu) on start up?

Will i have to update BIOS?

BIOS
Brand Phoenix Technologies, LTD
Version 5.59
Date 5/20/2010

Couldn't find any other updates past this one,all the BIOS I found online aren't even as recent as this one.
And for the power supply,currently has 20-pin + 4-pin,but bottom 4 on the board are not being used,should I get a 24pin?

To enable Legacy boot you would have to go into the bios and find it.  It is different for every bios.  And the key to get into the bios is different for every bios.  Usually it is f2, f12, del, f8 or f9.

That processor and PSU should work nicely.  You shouldn't have to update the bios.

You won't have to enable legacy boot if the computer boots to windows perfectly the first time, otherwise enable legacy boot.

Sorry there is no reply so far to your issue, this does sound very odd that a password has be set for the BIoS. I will do some research and see if I can come across an answer I will post it.

in the meantime ...BUMP

I know this is an old topic but if anyone else ends up here looking for the answer to your bios password question, the answer is to set the jumper on the motherboard that clears the bios password. It is a jumper right next to the clear cmos jumper. It has happened to me more than once and that is the fix every time.
