If you can afford to go over $750 then an i5-4440 would be a worthy improvement over an i3.

A G3258 only has two real applications in gaming. 1) as a temporary CPU waiting to be upgraded to an i5/i7. 2) For games that can only use 1-2 threads and will never be played at the same time as anything else is being done (i.e. watching youtube videos/browsing the web/etc...). And it's also $800 before rebates.

Except that upgrade isn't always an affordable option for people, thus making an i3 very often the better choice.
