Question about archived storage

If I create an archive with a password with something like 7zip or winrar and then add files to it later, does it have to archive the entire thing again or just the one file. I want to make a pretty large archive and if it's going to reprocess the whole thing over and over every time a new file is added it's just not worth it. Just curious if anyone knows, thanks.

I think it just adds the file like normal.

So I like that idea. But one other quick question if you might know. When I make the archive everything that was in the original archive is password protected, but anything I add to it later is not. 

 

Never mind, figured this out. Thanks for the help though.
