GTX 970 underperforming?

I have a GTX 970 and an i5 4570, and I feel like, only in some games, that my gtx 970 is underperforming.  I play dragon age inquisition at 50-70 fps, on high-ultra, and bf4 at 60+ on ultra, but when I play smite, a dx9 game at max settings I get 120 fps while it is at a 150 fps cap.  with my r9 280x, I used to hit that 150 fps cap.  the 970 is obviously way way WAY better though so what could be the problem?  could smite possible favor team red?

All games are different. It all depends on how well it is optimized, and yes they could favor AMD. Do they have any signs of it though like at the beginning like some games say Nvidia the way it is meant to be played.

All games are different. It all depends on how well it is optimized, and yes they could favor AMD. Do they have any signs of it though like at the beginning like some games say Nvidia the way it is meant to be played.

Oh then they probably don't favor either. I don't know then. Anything above 60 FPS sounds good to me so 120 doesn't sound bad at all.

I have a GTX 970 and an i5 4570, and I feel like, only in some games, that my gtx 970 is underperforming.  I play dragon age inquisition at 50-70 fps, on high-ultra, and bf4 at 60+ on ultra, but when I play smite, a dx9 game at max settings I get 120 fps while it is at a 150 fps cap.  with my r9 280x, I used to hit that 150 fps cap.  the 970 is obviously way way WAY better though so what could be the problem?  could smite possible favor team red?

970 is not "way way WAY better" then 280X, it's only marginally better, same as 290X in games optimized for both team green and red, and the difference decreases the lower of res you play at. In a game that favors AMD or is better optimized for their GPUs, yes a 280X can possibly outperform a 970.

I had a similar problem but got it sorted, I have GTX970 and in games that require more power i'm getting 200+ fps, rarely dipping below the 200FPS mark. I have a 4790k which would ultimately be why i get a better fps count, but since the GPU does the brunt of the heavy lifting it shouldn't be half of what i'm getting. 

 

My motherboard cable wasn't fully plugged in (duh i know), Check power cables are plugged fully into card, make sure PSU is high enough, although i doubt it isn't if you had the 280X as i'm sure its more power hungry and the GTX970 only requires a 450W PSU anyways.

 

Have you checked for any bottle necks? whether the CPU is maxing out?
