Hi Everyone,

Been watching Linus TechTips on youtube one and off for around a year now, and figured it was time to upgrade some of my core components.

I've put together a list of parts I'm looking to replace and was hoping to get some feedback.

The parts I've singled out are as follows;

Motherboard;

Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

CPU (Wont be overclocking);

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8370 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail

RAM;

AMD Gamer 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-17000C10 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit

GPU;

Asus AMD Radeon R9 285 DC2 OC "Strix Edition" 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

System is general workstation use (Office, Visio, Terminal workstation for Cisco lab and other multimedia) and gaming with focus on Gaming on such titles as Elite Dangerous and Skyrim to name but two.

I'm really looking for best performance over cost on this build, so your feedback is really appreciated. And feel free to tell me what I've spec'ed above is pants! :)

PS, I already have a case (Coolermaster Cosmos S, PSU (Tagen BZ Series modular 700W) as well as drives ect.. (don't need replacing yet).

My Budget stretches to around £600.00 or $900.00. Want to get something that's a really good base to develop over the near future.

For that budget, is there a reason you aren't going for an i5-4690k? Motherboard will last you Haswell - Devil's Canyon - Broadwell series CPUs.

Hi CBK,

Looking at pricing the Haswell i5 is a full £50.00 more expensive over the AMD FX-8 8370.

What's the performance gain between the two?

Hi Hazza,

Thanks for the post!

Unfortunately I do need new ram, had to strip out my DIMMs as a number have gone faulty... One of the reasons I'm looking to upgrade, that and the fact I'm currently running AMD 955 Blackbox with AMD 6970.

Running on 4Gb right now... As I said in my previous post I'll be running office apps (large databases and spreadsheets) so need quite a bit of RAM while multitasking.

What is the benefit of going Haswell over FX-8? is there a noticeable performance difference?
