Hello everyone:

So I made a post a few days back as to whether I should build or buy a server for Arma 3.  Forum members helped me reach the conclusion that, and I agree, that a quad core is an absolute must.

Here's the catch, I want to spend as little as humanly possible.

So, I've realized for what I need, I have to get a used server.

Here's the problem.  I cannot find any!  I live in Ontario Canada, so it needs to be around there for shipping purposes.

The only requirements are this:

  • Quad Core processor, Intel or AMD Opteron, at least the 1st generation of i5/Xeon.  No Core 2 machines.  If it's an Intel Xeon, I'll accept dual Xeon systems only if the price is very reasonable.  I don't want a machine with a single 1.8ghz dual core Xeon though, quad cores only and concurrent with the 1st gen of i5s.  Socket.. 775 I think?
  • RAM is unimportant, but it needs to have DDR3 slots on the mobo, I don't care how much is included
  • Don't care about the HDD
  • Form factor: Tower, 1U, 2U, no bigger
  • Brands: Any

Cheers

PS: Didn't really know what section to put this in, since this really isn't a build per say, although I'd upgrade it once I bought it.

I just read up on that thread you posted. None of the people in that thread actually suggested something useful for your scenario.

Why exactly would you have to go with 4 cores for the server? In the case of Arma-Servers it goes like this:

Core-Speed >>> Core-Number

Especially for a 10 man server you will not need 4 cores.

Yeah, most of the replies were telling me to get very expensive hardware, which is fine but I did state that I needed something cheap.

Honestly, there's no reason I went with 4 cores.  Despite having litterally thousands of hours in OFP/A1/2/3, I've never had a server, and the whole way it works honestly confuses me.  I just assumed that is what would be needed.

I may go back to the drawing board then and re-consider the cheap Pentium G3258 if it works like that.

Cheers

I have not been hosting enough ARMA 3 Servers lately to know anything about this (shame on me, really  ) - but the way it worked on ARMA 2 was that it could barely make use of more than one thread for the server.

No need in having 4 for a server that's only going to coordinate 10 players anyway. I don't know what you're planning on hosting anyway, but if it's just relatively small missions and nothing like KOTH or even total conversions like BP or Epoch you'll never be able to make use of 4 threads for 10 people.

If you were to go with something else you're going to be hosting off of the machine it would make sense to make it future-proof - but not if you're specifically searching for something cheap.

Ah alright.  Honestly, I don't plan to host anything else, except maybe a 10 slot TS server because Skype is so utterly terrible these days.  It's only so a few buddies and I can screw around, play RHS etc.

If I just need a single core high clock, I think the best idea is get the G3258, buy a cheap but good Noctua cooler and do a massive OC.
