I'm at the brink of buying the parts for, and building my first ever desktop PC!

the build I'm gonna make is gonna be used for (in no particular order) gaming (gonna start with kind of older games first [especially with game series like AC] then progress to current games, especially AAA games, video editing, movie/series watching, making and storing documents.

I really want to believe that getting an SSD would make my life so much easier especially when I do video editing and other more work/productive stuff, but at the same time I think and upgrade in hardware that I get now would make my life feel smoother when compared to this laptop that I'm using now, please give any insight on that as well. I know I can get much more storage if I buy an HDD with the same price, but I'm okay with constantly deleting files if I'm gonna end up with a much faster piece of hardware anyway.

I also want to add in the fact that I like to multitask (or maybe the better way of saying it is that I'm lazy to close some programs that I'm not using) in that as of now I have 38 tabs open on Google chrome, with 10 of them being from this website. so if any case the RAM I'm planning to get isn't enough for this + the aforementioned uses that I'll have for it (like gaming + the tabs open) then just tell me.

here's my build as of now, any comments and criticisms would be welcome, but only if they'll be helpful. no bad mouthing just for the sake of shaming me please.

BTW the prices listed are the prices that they're sold at here in the Philippines, and I just converted them to make it easier for you guys to understand.

Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU Cooler - $44.848

Intel Core i5-4690K - $287.03
Asus Z97-A - $224.24
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 2x4gb ddr3 1866 CL9 - $118.85
Crucial MX100 512gb - $287.03
Antec TruePower TP-550 80Plus Bronze - $71.76
Corsair Carbide Air 540 Airflow ATX Cube Case - $170.42
Gigabyte GTX 970 4GB - $515.75 (and I'm planning to buy another one for SLI after 1-2 months)

Looks good to me! I'd suggest you look for a way to add a HDD to go along with your SSD. Trust me, its the best way to go and a 1TB HDD won't break the bank, you can also add it later. You put the OS and all the programs you use on the SSD and all your media and games stuff on the HDD.

I actually just realized how expensive the entire thing is, since I always see posts here and in youtube about how to make gaming PCs under $1k, and seeing that mine is already above $1.5k is surprising to me. I actually thought my build was average at best... any other possible choices to make it cheaper?

in getting an HDD, should I still care about getting the fast kind? like a WD black? or is a Seagate Barracuda good enough? I'll probably buy one when I go and buy my other 970, since that's the time that I'll really get my storage full (probably)

Well that's probably because hardware seems to be much more expensive in the Philippines than over here. You could go AMD on your GPU and possibly save some money, but otherwise I don't see many ways of getting the price down very much without losing performance. And no, you don't need a fast HDD, Seagate or WD Blue is just fine.

darn it, so the price of my build in the US is actually cheaper?

ok I just checked, and it turns out I'm spending about $500 more here in the Philippines that I would buying from the US...

but still in terms of price, my build is actually kind of surprisingly hefty in the USA, hopefully the price also matches the performance. considering I won't buy a new keyboard and mouse for this and will just borrow my friend's old keyboard and mouse, good thing I have a 47" plasma tv so that I won't have to buy a monitor anymore though...

yeah, prices in the Philippines are known to be pretty high. If you're gaming at 1080p and are willing to turn the settings down to high in some games, you could get a 280X or a GTX 770 and lower the price a little.

well if there's any hardware that I'd sacrifice in my rig, the GPU would probably be the last one (if I'll even consider it haha), since I'm still gonna go through with my plan to SLI some 970's and get the most out of every game I can on 1080p. thank you though for the advice!

Well in that case you'd have to sacrifice either the SSD or the motherboard/CPU and go with non-overclockable components. Or just pay the price  :)
