970 or R9 290x?

Go to solution Solved by Tacitus,

If you want to go 4k, get the 290x as in crossfire those do better at 4k than 970s in SLI.

At 1080p you'll not really notice a difference, at 1440p same again, both are good at it.

I noticed that the R9 290x came down in price and I wondered which I should get? If I get the R9 290X I would probobly get the MSI Lightning and If I got the 970 I would get the ASUS Strix.

I would say 290x lightning any day of the week. A fear the 970 loves to have coil whine and a 290x lightning would certainly be faster.

if you plan on playing lot of mantle games then id say the 290x, if u have a gsync monitor then 970. although you will have coil whine i guess, but better performance per wattage.. i dunno, you must know;)

If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.

Does all the 970s present coil whining?

No. Mine doesn't. All the reviews I saw oline didn't as well. I truly believe this "omg, 970s have coil whine!" complain is actually dumb people mistaking high fan RPM for actual coil whine.

I am sure not every 970 has coil whine, but I have heard it is a problem among many people with the cards. Let me refer to my friend he just posted about it yesterday. All 3 of 970 had whine at varying levels.
