If you don't need any special features other than oc'ing, I'd suggest going with a 4690k and the cheapest z97m board you can find.

Hey everyone I was planning to finally upgrade my old gaming rig from an AMD Phenom II 960T and Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 to an Intel platform.

 

Trouble is, I'm probably a lot more knowledgeable about AMD stuff than Intel at the moment. Since AMD has nothing worthwhile to upgrade to as of late, I was thinking about giving Intel a try this time around, because I don't want my new R9 290 to be slowed down by my old Phenom II 960t. 

 

I'm a pretty decent overclocker, and was genuinely thinking about getting an i5 processor. Although I'm not completely sure which one. Also I would like to get a motherboard that will give me a relatively good upgrade path down the line. Is it wise to purchase a Z97 board at this time, as they are a little pricey? Also what are some good recommendations that aren't too expensive?

Hmmm a cheap motherboard? Are the Intel cpus that easy on the VRMs these days?

More easy than before due to the new cpus. --Plus I haven't really come across a z97 board of questionable build quality yet.
