I use a laptop as my computer, no desktop. I need a storage solution to storage all my data (movies, music etc) onto a external drive. I'd like to have a redundant external system so if one drive fails, I wouldn't lose my stuff. I want a quick and easy solution that won't cost me over $500.

I don't really understand how NASes work fully besides being able to access them through your network. Is it possible to not connect them to the network and just use it as a external drive in raid? I know some NAS allow you to set some kind of privacy on the NAS so only you can access particular folders and not everyone on the network.

Considered using a NAS Synology DS212J, and 2 WD reds.

Some advice or tips is appreciated.
