Hello!

Ok, so my 11-12 year old cousin really wants a gaming rig! So he asked me to help him build one, and the last half year, he been working hard trying to reach to a budget around 900$, which in my opinion is a good budget, for a medium gaming build. So just to make sure he uses his money the best, I would really like if a different set of eyes also looked at the parts we have found, just to get some feedback, and ideas ;)

So to the build

CPU : i5 4460

I have chosen intel i5 4460, because of the low budget, originally I would have bought a i5 4690K, just because he might in the furture would start OC, but because of the budget I would much rather get a smaller CPU and keep the 750TI.

GPU : MSI R9 2702 gb

Looks like a reallly nice GPU, and have gotten some nice reviews and appears to be perfect for this build, deliveres nice performance for a great price. btw he currently plays a lot of Minecraft, but he will most lickely start to play more power demanding games, when he gets a PC which can handle them.

HDD : Seagate 1tb SSHD ( ST1000DX001)

The best thing would have been a SSD and HDD combo, but because i want it to be as easy as possible for him I've dicide to go with the middle way.

RAM : HyperX Fury 1600MHz 8gb (2x4gb)

Well.. just the cheapest ram, really don´t have any big arguments..

Mobo : Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3

A very low price mobo, but it seems to have all the functions need

PSU : Corsair cx600

Overall the systems dosen´t need to much power, so thought 600w would be plenty, and I really like corsair..

Cabinet : Corsair Cabide SPEC-03

I haven´t dicided this, but it was my cousin who choose it, well because he thinks it looks cool :D

So I hope you guys like the build, imo it looks like an okay build, hope to get some feedback so I can get my cousin the best possibel build!

Time and time again I say this, but If you are going with a Locked Intel CPU, there is no reason not to look at the Intel H-series socket or the Intel B-series sockets instead. Z97 is meant for overclocking CPUs, get a H97 if you aren't OCing. Also, for around $1000 you can throw a GTX970 + i5-4690k together, at least in the USA.

this. An i5 4460 + cheap H97 mobo + 970 (or 290 if you can't fit a 970 into the budget) + 550W PSU = great gaming rig

yeah I know this, and also tried looking for a H97, though I were not able to find anything much cheaper than the Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3, there were actually more expensive... btw I live in Denmark, and mainly use the site komplett.dk

And thanks for the very quick replies!

Komplett doesn't use dollars--what's your actual budget?

The system is very unbalanced for gaming. You should be getting a more powerful graphics card.

If your cousin can deal with having more than one drive, I'd suggest going with a ssd + hdd instead.

There's no point getting a z-series motherboard if you're not planning to oc.

The psu is overkill. A decent 300w is already plenty for a 750 Ti.

Have you checked other retailers? Looking at PCPartpicker's forums showed people also recommend this site for DK: http://www.edbpriser.dk/

The H97 is just more expensive, eventhough it make no sense... and if i go with dual drive, I fear I would end up using to much time uninstalling and installing on the computer... yeah the budget in DKK is 5000

Yeah and it really irretates me.. but it appears the cheapest H97 is around 700dkk(114$) and the Z97 is 600(100$)...

You could just go with a non-refresh cpu and go with a much cheaper 1150 motherboard.

I don't see how a drives would use up more time? Installing Windows onto a ssd should be much faster than on a sshd (which for installations is no different from a hdd)

but well the problem is not the Windows install, but later installs, such as games and such stuff, because I´m not sure he will be able to manage what will go where...  and now Im confused? don't the I5 4460 use 1150 socket? and do you happend to know how if the B85 is a go, cause komplett have a package with a i5 4460, 8gb and a MSI B85-E45 for 400..

And again thanks for helping!

Yeah, theres a line of really cheap Z97s motherboards like that, the ASrock anniversary and the MSI PC mate. I got me said Gigabyte because I wanted to overclock my G3258 (and an i5 in the not-so-distant future)

Since you're only going for base clock, you might as well get the asus H81m

I just make a 'Games' folder on my hdd and direct my games there during installation.

The 4460 is Haswell-refresh and only works on h97/z97 boards and not others without a bios update.

If komplett offers a combo, the bios will likely be updated for the 4460. It's good to contact them to make sure though.

Ok, thanks I will write and ask them ;) do you think it would be an okay board?

Ok so i changed the GPU to a R9 270 is this an okay change? i have changed to the AMD GPU because of the more performance for the value.

The 270 is a good upgrade from a 750 Ti but you should be balancing more of the budget around so that you can get a better graphics card like a R9-285.

Okay.. I see your point with balance.. But I was thinking he maybe later could expand with a second R9 270.. I know its not going to be a huge improvement though I recall reading somewhere it is around 50%.. Which is still some..

Again thanks! Really awesome you guys wanna help me!

That could work. The current plan isn't bad now that I'm looking back at the prices.
