So i recently went out a purchased an R9 290 from Gigabyte (Rev 1.0) and to my dismay, it has caused me a lot of head ache... It powers on, boots up and I install AMD drivers... Then for whatever reason, it decides to either black screen or freeze in-game and completely restart my computer. I thought it might of been a temp issue, but with the fans revved up it decides it wants to freeze and restart even when watching youtube or browsing (Games just tend to make it crash almost immediately into any given time) Here's some things I've already tested:

- Re-Installed Windows + Updates
- Downloaded and Installed Latest AMD Drivers
- Downclocked My GPU (Afterburner)
- Upped Voltage and Power (Afterburner)
- Monitored Temp, 40c Idle

- Cried in a Corner

After some research I've found I'm not the only one having trouble with this card, just with a "Gigabyte R9 290 Crash" google search you can see the problem. Seems to be mostly with the Gigabyte Rev 1.0 edition, but I've seen it even with Sapphires. I can replace this card at my PC shop so money and replacements aren't an issue, I'm thinking of the 780 by Gigabyte... But just hope it isn't a GIGABYTE related issue. Oh and also, my PSU is Antec HCG-620m.

Gigabyte make some very good products,i wouldn't be afraid of purchasing a gigabyte card.Anyway if you can i'd try running your system with a different PSU just in case that's the issue rather than the GPU.Also what are the rest of your specs?

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3

FX-6100 @ 4.0GHz with CoolerMaster T4 Cooler

2x4GB DDR3 1600 Ram

Cooler Master N400 Case

Antec HCG-620m PSU

I don't have any high end PSU to compare this on, only el-cheapo ones. I'm honestly conviced it's just an R9 290 issue, too many videos and forums showcasing this problem for it not to be.

Your psu is not the one causing the issues here im sure.If you can get another gpu to replace it i say go for the 970 it is better then the 780 in every way.

  • 2 weeks later...

See if you can swap it for a GTX 970

Go with a 780 is a little downgrade in performance.

EDIT: Forget it, you went with a 780, is good anyways.

I would have gone with the 970 if I could, but the price increase is quite a bit greater in my country so the 780 was the next option I could have went with in that price range. Not disappointed though, plays everything I've tried so far maxed out at 60fps+ and is quite the significant upgrade from my original 660 Ti.

That's nice! I upgraded my 760 (same as a 660 Ti) to a 970. There's a lot of difference! Anyways you're getting good performance, the 780 is pretty close to a 970 in terms of performance, you're only missing an extra GB of VRAM, but it's fine if you're playing at 1080p

In my country the 780 costs more than a 970

Wow I wish I had that luxury, Honestly living in a place like America is a dream for tech lovers. No Idea how lucky it is to live there, you'd kill yourself over the price increase here in Australia lol...

Yup, America is nice for tech. Sadly I live in Mexico. I paid $370-380 for a G1 Gaming 970, is a little bit expensive, but now it costs more than $430 so I guess that i'm a lucky guy. I don't think that you have worse price increase than Mexico, here the dollar price is just going up, everybody gets screwed.

Still cheaper than where i live lol. Here in Australia, the cheapest Reference 970 is $439 while a Non-Reference is $499...
