A friend has offered me a Radeon HD 7870 XT for $100. I know that with this card I will be able to run games at much higher settings than my current card; the Radeon HD 7750. I am not a person who needs to have their games at ultra settings all the time, but I would like to run my games at higher settings.

I have done some research and found that this card has the approximate performance of the R9 270X.

Should I:

a.) Get the 7870 XT for $100

b.) Get the R9 270X

c.) Get a card much better, like the 280X

d.) Other

Thanks in advance and happy holidays. :)

you can pick up a 7950 for under 100$ on ebay, or this fourm at times.

edit: went from a 7770 to my current 7950. I paid 140 for it a while ago, but they can go for as low as 80$. now theres not much of a diffrence between a 7870 and 7950 but it exists, and wouldnt pay over 80$ for the 7870. that, and last week i paid 120$ for a BRAND NEW 7970. it was open box, but it honestly appears to be brand new.

That's a good deal, and there's no point in getting an R9 270X, because the R9 270X is a re-branded HD 7870. I would personally go with a stronger card so I won't have to upgrade for a while.

The 270X is a rebranded 7870 which is based on standard Pitcairn. The 7870XT is actually a different card based on Tahiti LE, a slightly cut down version of the chip used in the 7950/R9 280

I have done some research and found that this card has the approximate performance of the R9 270X.

At stock it performs only slightly worse then the 7950/280. Just give it a slight overclock and you'll be getting R9 280 if not better performance. The 7870XT are great cards, I'd definitely get it.

Oh, it's Tahiti? Woops, I need to do my research.

If anybody is still around, I found a 7970 for $140 and a 7950 for $100.

Is the 7970 worth the extra $40?

Thanks!

You can overclock a 7950 to almost match the performance of a stock 7970. If you oc the 7970 though it will perform about 15%-25% better then a oc 7950. In my opinion 40$ is worth it.
