I'm trying to build a gaming rig and I'm not sure what parts to use that are both good and future proof at least for 5 to 7 years.  I have a list of parts here. Can I get some feedback please?

Budget/Local : US $1,000 or less

Purpose: General workstation, Little to no video editing, Casual gaming 1080p (i.e. minecraft and maybe a few big name games, mostly light weight games), fast web browsing and youtube (or equivalent video site) surfing

Monitors: Starting with one, may move to three in the future

Peripherals: I'll handle getting an OS, but any suggestions on gaming with linux? (I don't like windows but will use if needed)

Upgrading: Some people have suggested a better GPU but I'm on a budget... If I crossfire the R9 270 with another one in the future would that solve the problem? Also, I've heard that the data ports on my board can interfere with plugging in the GPU... Can someone confirm this? Should I use a different board or a different GPU?

Here's my list. What do you think? Let me know. Thanks!

Go for it, you dont need 16GB RAM for gaming tho, but I shouldn't say anything, made the same call on the RAM as you did :)

However that graphics card is NOT future proof for that many years, if you keep your game library up to date you're gonna need a better graphics card, although I'm not that much read up on AMD graphics cards.

Anyway, nice rig! :)

I hate to say it but that wont be 5-7 year kind of future proof build. Reason being is within 5-7 years the processing power needed to play games will more than likely require hyper-threaded performance and the 4690k cant do hyper-threaded tasks. I believe you would get 1-2 out of your GPU and 2-3 out of your cpu with how gaming technology has been advancing over the past 7 years. But it is still a nice build but i honestly think you will see 3 years max before needing an overhaul. If i were you reduce your ram down to 8gb and either get a bigger GPU (preferably) or go for the i7-4790k cpu.

Think about it like this have you seen a pc lately that was built 7 years ago still able to play new AAA releases. I know there are a few out there that were built that long ago but they werent built with the standard 4690k and R9 270/280 kind of build from back then they were built with a full on enthusiast type build such as like todays i7-5960k and double gtx 980 equivalent type build from back then.

If you get a better video card like a R9 290 or a GTX 770 i could see this build being relevant for about 3-4 years pretty easy.

Everything looks nice, but I'd recommend a different GPU. Even a GTX 760 or an R9 280 would be more futureproof than the 270.

EDIT: and yes, a budget would help too.

that GPU is a hell of a lightweight compared to what else youve got listed there

I am jumping on the bandwagon here too...

Go 8 GB of RAM, use the $100 to upgrade the graphics card.  R9 280, R9 280X, or the GTX 970... in that order.

EVGA has good deals on PSU's if you are in the USA:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438027&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

To be honest, dude, you won't build a PC today that is futureproof for 5-7 years. I'd say the best PC you can build today would be 3-4 years max...

There's no such thing as future proof. 5-7 years is also a long time to go without upgrading. I would suggest getting what you need now and plan on more frequent future upgrades.

This belongs in the New Builds and Planning section. I'm moving the thread.

Please post in the correct sub-forum in the future.

This is another option for an SSD... if you don't like Sandisk:  http://pcpartpicker.com/part/mushkin-internal-hard-drive-mknssdcr240gbg2

And of course, the case is really up to you.

Where is the storage? No SSD or HDD

Do you want to Overclock?  If not get a non-K processor, if so get an aftermarket CPU cooler.

The graphics card shouldn't get in the way of the sata ports.

No storage?

Is the $1000 just for the tower and not any peripherals including displays? What kind of dollars are you using?
