Hello Linus tech tips community!

I have been watching linus tech tips chanel for a while now, I remember when he was at 250000 ish subscribers :-)! I have watched his 4k build guild about 10 times now and I think I am ready to build it! This is my first build and he always says if you need help to come to this wonderful community :-). I do have a few questions. My first question is do I need a sound card? I have heard a lot of people talking about it who I have asked, but do I need it? and what does it really do? My second question is in his video he did not show how to install a dvd drive, how hard is it to install that? My last question is what softwares should I use to make sure it is running ok? I know at the end of the 4k build guide video he said he recommends aida64, memtest84, does anyone know the links to them? I just want to be safe and not download anything I do not know on my new pc :-).

Thank you all for your help! I would also like to thank linus for making this video! I do not know if this is the right place to post this, I am still new to the forums :P

Have a wonderful day!

-MrMonteCristo

Hope I was able to help! :D

1. The onboard sound on the motherboard is good enough for basic/moderate use. If you really are an audiophile user or needs a good high-end sound card then you should get one. That's how you look at it

2. Depends on the case you want to build on, there might be 2 to 3 5.25 inch drive bays or sometimes even 0. Installing it is quite easy, remove the front cover of the bay at the front of the case, slide the DVD drive into that open bay, and then screw it in or any sorts of locking mechanism (again, depends on the case). Finally just run the SATA and power cables like when you install a HDD/SSD.

Plus give us more details about the PC you want to build, budget, location, usage, personal preferences, etc ... So everybody can help you with more ease

First off, welcome to the forums :)

1)  You only need one if you have like $300 headphones or you want to hook your computer to an external mixer properly or you want to use any audio able except 3.5MM

2) This is almost always the second easiest part of the build (second to RAM installation)  Simply pull out the cover (usually squeeze to clamps together and pull) and put in the DVD player through the front of the case.

3) I use aida64 for CPU, RAM, etc. and I render a video for my GPU

Thank you guys for your help, and explaining it to me :-). Here is some more details about my pc that I am going to build :-).

details about the PC you want to build:I honestly want to build LTT 4k pc because he is using the case I want and his video is easy to follow along with and build. The only piece on the pc I changed is the graphics cards, instead of the gtx 780 ti I got dual gtx 980.

budget: I do not really have a budget, but I would like to keep it around the cost of this 4k build, maybe a few hundred more.

location:To be completely honest, I do not really know what you mean by that. I am in the U.S.A.

usage:I play games like Minecraft, Simcity,Farming simulator, and other games like that. I do plan on recording and editing my gameplay, and just normal internet use, like youtube videos, and forums like this one :-).

personal preferences: I really only have a few, I like the clear case, and I like just the look of the see through case, and the PC itself :-).

If you do not know what I am talking about, here is the link to the 4k build. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/166464-parts-list-for-ultimate-4k-gaming-pc-build-guide/

For the dvd drive, will I just plug the psu into it and the cord from the dvd drive into the motherboard?

Thanks again for your help :-)

Hope I was able to help! :D

This is what I would go for the main core components, the peripherals are up to your personal preferences. :)
If you live near a Micro Center, this will be cheaper.

You connect the sata data cable from the DVD Drive to a SATA in the motherboard and you connect a SATA power connector from the PSU to the DVD Drive.

Thank you guys so much for all your help!!! :-) I can not wait to build this, I have ordered all the part's and i'm just waiting for them to come. :-) I do have just one more question. I have been doing some more research, and I am going to be recording my gameplay a lot. Now I know that takes up a lot of memory, what do you guys think? should I use an external hard drive, or should I put like a 1TB storage into it? I am going to be using the Corsair 760T White ATX Full Tower Case, it does have hard drive bay's. How do I install tho's? I know it is simple Lol :-), and should I install it when I am building my pc, or after it is done and up and running?

Thank you!

Hope I was able to help! :D

Grab some internal hard drives, it's just as simple as the DVD Drive. Exact same way, actually. Install it when you're building it and mount it into your hdd drive cages.

I did forget one thing. I am using the Corsair Obsidian Series 760T case. Linus replaced all three fans with the Bitfenix Spectre Pro LED Fans, are all the fans in the case the same size(140mm)? Thank you :-)

Hope I was able to help! :D
