I've recently become interested in the idea of a smart watch and would like to try one out. However I don't really want to spend around $100 or of course more on one if i'm not even sure yet I'd find it useful or necessary. So I've heard that there are cheaper less mainstream alternatives for less than $100 that will give me the same general idea before going into it. I was wondering if anybody could recommend one to me.

PEBBLE ALL THE WAY!

It's amazing. I had to sell mine, but I just bought another tonight; great little device! Huge ecosystem of apps/watchfaces, the screen is readable in sunlight, and it lasts 5-6 days. Plus it's fully waterproof, not just resistant like many smart watches.

The Pebble is easily your best choice. I honestly prefer it to the 200-300 dollar ones simply because of the 7 day battery life (that I'm still getting easily over a year later).

Corsair 900D | MSI MPower Max Z87 AC | i7-4790K @ 4.7Ghz | 1080 Ti SLI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400
XSPC Raystorm | EK-FC Nickel GPU block/backplate | 2x Alphacool UT60 480mm & XT45 240mm | 11x Linus Edition NF-F12
Schiit Modi/Magni 2 Uber | 5" KRK Rokit G3 | KRK 10S2 | Acer Predator X34 | Dell S2716DG

Regular in red; I had the black, and wanted something a little more exciting.

I'd go Steel (Best Buy is having them on sale for $149 this week), but my budget is $99 and I got one for $85 on Amazon. When I get some more money, the Steel is a definite contender; but I'd wait for the Pebble 2 by that point ;)

@cleb - here's the Pebble website if you want to check it out. Honestly, it's better than even high-end Android Wear smart watches, because it doesn't try to do everything; it's a watch that does more, not a smartphone shoved into a watch.
