What's going on LTTF? This is my idea of a home NAS/VPN build. The OS I'm going with is AMAHI, but if there is a better OS that someone can suggest I am open to ideas. I don't really have a budget constraint and I would like atleast 4-8TB to start with but plan to upgrade to 16TB eventually.

Constructive criticism is welcome!

I don't have much experience with what you plan to do with the VPN, are you going to route you internet traffic through it then to a VPN? If so you may wanna use the A10 6800K AMD quad core or the AMD FX 4130 Black edition  the extra power would for sure help. Best of luck, sounds like an awesome build.

If this is just a NAS/VPN machine, i would suggest an Intel Atom based platform...Supermicro A1SRM-LN7F-2758 is a really good option for this exact application

I would also suggest FreeNAS with ZFS file system for your NAS OS.

I think the cooler is way overkill for the CPU. If it is just a simple nas I would recommended an intel pentimento or if you really need the performance an i3. Why Intel you may ask? Better performance per watt and they run more quiet which I think is both essential for nas. Get a define r5 if you want a great silent case. Sounds like a interesting idea! Good luck and have fun with it
