I've been intriguied by linux for awhile and have decided a want to pull the plug and try it. Now I am curios what version of linux should I use? I have had my eyes on luna (elementary os), GNOME 3, and ubuntu.

I think you should use Ubuntu, and replace the GUI with something less memory intensive like Xfce like I did for mine. I'm using 150MB of RAM at startup, and my measly core 2 duo laptop acts like it's new.

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.

Well it depends what you're going for. Mint is most similar to Windows and ubuntu is nice and in a weird way feels like a mix of Mac and Windows. If you want to hack then kali is for you and if you want something really moddable then fedora is your best bet. Something really lightweight and basic would be gnome and I personally don't like elementary.
