Conscription? Never thought Finland was such a shitty country

It's not that bad. You can delay the conscription for ten years for any reason whatsoever, like studies, work, whatever. But every Finnish adult man has to serve at least 6 months, as otherwise the military reserves would be tiny. Well... It's not much better even now: if for example Russia decided to invade Finland, the war wouldn't last even a single hour.

 

AFAIK a lot of other countries have conscription as well, like was it Austria or Switzerland which has conscription as well, and some other countries as well. Plus the conscription here isn't bad: you get free food and a roof over your head for that time, you get paid a small sum of money per day (from 5€ to 11€ or so. Not much, but it's something), plus it's a rather unique experience. You can make new friends there, and learn useful outdoor skills.

 

But yeah... A lot of people hate it. It's surprisingly easy to get valid papers to prove that you're not fit enough to serve, though.
