Hello guys, I am building my first gaming PC after school gets out, and I need help with the processor. My original plan was the Ivy Bridge i5 3570k, but now with haswell out I wonder if I should instead purchase the haswell i5 4670k. I will be running games like skyrim, civ 5, portal 2, and battlefield 4, with a radeon 7870 (xfx). Finally, I heard that AMD is so cheap because they are known to damage easily, is that true. Thanks.

PS. This is off topic, but which brand of a radeon 7870 is best. Right now I am looking XFX.

You wouldnt have a problem with the 7870. You should go with something like the ASUS DCu2 though.

Thanks for that part of my post, but my real concern was with the CPU. Ivy bridge i5 3570k or Haswell i5 4670k, for gaming and schoolwork?

Theres only like around 10% difference between these two chips. At one point the price for a 4670k Haswell was the same for the price of an 3570k Ivy Bridge at Tigerdirect.ca. I would go with the one that is cheapest. I would go with a Sapphire, HIS, or a MSI card because they make great gpus.

everything depends on your budget.

also have you decided if you want to go with intel or AMD, both have pro's and con's

and decide what form factor you like to work with, then you can decide what to go with, as if someone just asks they want to build a new computer its has so many different varrables.

If you just want games and basic school work a 6 core would be fine, if you match it up with a good graphics card you will be fine.

the more core, the more wattage, more mhz clock speeds = more cost, more heat, more power consumption. you have to get what you can afford and select a good quality cooler with it.

This year i upgraded to a FX6300 and love it, runs no problem. if you want Intel and can afford it go for a Haswell to futureproof it.

got to love Asus components

I would pay attention to newegg deals and when they have a decent motherboard, cpu combo go for that.

I got my CPU and Mobo for less than $380 eight months ago. (CPU alone was $240 and mobo $180)

My build: 600t Graphite Grey | ASUS P8Z77-V LGA | i5-3570K (H100i cooled) | 2 x GTX 560 2GB

256 SSD for OS

3x1TB in RAID 5 with 60 SSD cache

You can save some cash by using a 6 core AMD and bump the graphics to a HD7950, besides AMD motherboards are cheaper too.
