Nice build template however, don't buy a locked i5, it's a total waste of money. Change the motherboard to an AMD version (AM3+ Socket Board) and you can buy an FX 8350 for the same price, which is a fully unlocked 8 core CPU!

A much better option would be an i5 4690K and a R9 290.

Not really, because the increase in the price of the CPU means that (as has been done) the GTX 970 has been swapped out for a R9 290.

Instead, assuming the i5 is your choise of processor, I suggest saving about £25- £30 and getting the i5 4570k and spending the saved money keeping the GTX 970 (prices on some custom OC models vary however some R9 290's and GTX 970's fall in this range of price difference) :)

The R9 290 cards are very good value for money right now and will cope just fine with 1080p.

Also the Intel route is a much better platform than going for a FX cpu.

The 4670K is only £15 cheaper, but the 4690K should overclock better due to the improved thermals if the op decides to do that at a later date.

So with a little bit of a rejig you can get a decent 970 if you can stretch your budget a little. I had to swap the psu to a non modular version.

To conclude, the OP has not been very specific. Supposing 1080p is the resolution of your friends monitor then the GTX 970 is certaintly overkill, but why not if you have the money to spend! However 1440p is where the GTX 970 begins to shine and the extra money spent in comparion to a R9 290/ GTX 760Ti is put to use.

I am guessing that if the op has a £650 budget then He probably doesn't have a 1440p monitor. The R9 290 is still more than capable though even at that resolution.

If you look at the GTX 970 benchmarks, you can see that the R9 290 still holds it's own - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/09/19/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review/6

You'll never know! Maybe the OP would want a 1440 screen one day. :)

i.e. the day after he builds his rig.
