Hi there,

I haven't shopped for a desktop for a while and need a bit of help.

Background :

My company is buying

Budget is around $1400 - not including monitors

Use : programming, graphic design, and some gaming

running three 24" monitors

I can't really build my own, it's just too complicated for tax and accounting purpose.

So I have pinpointed two machines, one DELL, one ASUS :

DELL XPS 8700 (around $1450 including taxes)

  • Intel® Core i7-4790 Processor 3.6GHz
  • 24GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz RAM
  • 2TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
  • Blu-Ray Reader (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
  •  Microsoft® Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
  • 2GB AMD Radeon HD R9 270 Graphics
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth® 4.0
  • 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
  • Integrated 7.1 with Waves MaxxAudio® Processing
  • 6x USB 3.0 and 4x USB 2.0
  • Multi-Media Card Reader

ASUS G10AJ-US004S (around $1430 including taxes)
  • 3.6 GHz Intel Core i7-4790 Quad-Core CPU
  • 16GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive + 128GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (2GB)
  • HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, & VGA
  • Slimtray Blu-ray Combo Drive
  • Gigabit Ethernet & 802.11ac Wi-Fi
  • USB Keyboard & Mouse Included
  • 6 x USB 3.0 Ports & 4 x USB 2.0 Ports
  • Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

They look pretty similar except the SSD and graphic cards and RAM.

Also if you know something better on that price range, feel free to help :)

Thanks a lot.

Its MORE than worth the effort of tax returns to build it yourself. I dont see the difference in your tax returns if you buy all your parts from the one vendor its still just one receipt.

the builds above are just utter garbage as to what you could build yourself for that price.

Quack 🦆

I'd go with the ASUS since if you plan on running 3 screens you will definitely need at least 2 GB Vram, the 128GB SSD shouldn't be too big of a problem since you are going to be storing only programs there. (although you can always get another drive in the future), and 16GB Ram should be enough but you can always buy a kit in the future and up that to 32 if need be.

Thanks. J.dirona you have some good points.

As for ordering all parts from one vendor, yes that's an option I could consider if it's really worth the trouble (and I can get something that much better)... but I didn't think the difference would be that big and "utter garbage" for these two builds is a bit strong, no?

Its not utter garbage, but like he said, for that amount of money you could build everyones dream computer! Thats why we always say that its not worth to buy pre-build PC's. There is a huge difference between assembling yourself or buying prebuilt.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
