Hello all,

With the recent release of the 970's and 980's we saw a big change in the gpu landscape when it comes to prices.

I wonder where the best value is right now.

We all know the new Maxwell is a beast and that 970's are almost unbeatable value but if you want to go a step further I am not as clear about what's actually the best value.

Here in France the cheapest 980 on amazon costs around 579€ and I can find a Sapphire R9 290x Vapor-X OC (4gb) for 425€. The 970's go from 380€ from up to 480€ for some after market solutions.

This being said i still think the 290x, especially this version of Sapphire which has a kickass cooler and a built in oc, is a beast of a card. When you look at performance per euro i think it has much more value than the 980 right now and it is a step up from the 970 most of times.

I knew it would be interesting to see how AMD would respond to the release of the 970 and 980 and I find that some 290 and 290x (after markets, namely the Sapphires tri-x and vapor-x) are really really interesting right now.

So, if you would to consider right now between the standard 980 at 579€ or the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC 4gb edition at 425€, where do you think the best value is???

Cheers

Here is the best value right now: http://www.amazon.fr/Sapphire-11227-00-40G-Carte-Graphique-PCI-Express/dp/B00HFA44YQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417788240&sr=8-1&keywords=r9+290

Aftermarket R9 290 with a really nice cooler, slightly slower than the 290x, beats the 970 in some games at 1080p and beats it across the board at 4k. Definitely the best bang for your buck right now at 260€.

I totally agree with you, hehe. I actually own that card, just recently bought it.

But my question is between the regular 980 and the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X OC edition. To re-enforce my point, Linustechtips just released a video on the new EVGA GTX 980 and, when he showed the benchmarks, all I could see was the standard 290X beating the standard 980 more often than not.

I mean, this 290x vapor-x edition costs almost 200€ less than the base, least expensive 980 here.

I think there is too much hype for the new 980 and people are overlooking the proven powerhouses that are really cheap right now.
