Advise for Math

Guest Philosophy

I was asked to help come up with some basic geometry sample problems with answers and show how they are done. I would like to know if this seems like a good one and if my math is correct. Thanks! I don't want to look like an idiot.  Is there anything you'd do different or change?

Yep it's all correct, except the first line of working where there are two equals signs (same in first line of check) but that is obviously a typo. If you are teaching this to someone you should probably add more context to the problem (like a painter sets up a ladder blah blah blah) just to make it more engaging and also be sure to mention that pythag theorem is appropriate in this situation because and ONLY because there is a right angle at the wall (otherwise you wouldn't be able to use it). Other than that, solid effort  :D  :D  :D

I have a good friend whos kids who are home schooled. They are younger and just getting into geometry. She cannot do math and I am fairly decent.

you should check out khan academy free and super great for math

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Isn't there a thing with Pythagoras' theorem that if you're calculating the length of a shorter side you have to throw everything you know out the window and do it differently?

Nope. Just rearrange the formula. lol

Omg please don't. I just failed my calc finals because I forgot my indefinite integrals... :(

If I added more context and added what not would this be a good one also? and is everything correct. My brain is fried after a days work. I haven't done geo since high School. @Mujteba @T.Vengeance

I think you should because it is a bit plain, but really depends on the students and how well they learn which is something only you can assess. Also you are putting equals signs where there should be plus signs like second line.

Also x+w =/ 180.... that's not correct geometry (The angles aren't on opposite sides of the same line.... that's a circle theorem you are thinking of  :)  )

For this you should start by: Sum of angles in a triangle is 180degrees. So from there we can work out w by

w+95+29=180

w=180-95-29

w=56

Also x can be found separately x+29=180 (it's a straight line right)

x=180-29

x=151

as you can see w+x= 151+56

w+x=207 which is not 180
