I just got a adata ssd and I am wondering if it is possible to install my windows 8.1 cd on it?  Or do I have to copy my OS I am using right now to my ssd?

You can use the disc and reinstall it, yes.

You can install the OS to the SSD using the disk if you cannot clone your old drive to the new SSD.

 i cloned my os on a WD Blue to a Crucial M550 SSD, had to do a few tweaks though.

I would back up and re-install windows when switching main c: drive

If it will fit on the SSD and you don't want to reinstall the software from your old drive. I would just clone the drive.
