Im planning on making a gaming rig and i'm not sure if i should go for one of the R9 290/x's or one of the gtx 970 and since most of them are pretty much equally priced (at least in Adelaide, Aus), I cant have that as a factor.

It's my first solo build so I have little knowledge on the general power to optimisation ratio, since my cpu is an AMD x8 FX-8350 and the main game I'm going to be playing (battlefield hardline) is optimised for AMD. The 970's from what I've searched, runs more efficiently and better generally speaking producing more frames at higher resolutions, but im not planning of going over 1080p.

My friend recomends getting the AMD card for the optimisation, but I would like a second opinion. And is there a specific version of either card that anyone would suggest?

Have you already purchased your CPU?  The 8350 is going to bottleneck high end GPUs like the 970 and 290.  You would be much better off getting a locked i5 if money is an issue.

What is your overall budget and I will whip something together for you.

My overall budget is around $1500 AUD (close to $1800 USD) and i have a few parts compiled in a list that comes to under $800, none of which i have purchased so i can make changes where i want and money isnt that much of an issue aslong as parts dont jump in price by over $200. Is it possible to pm you the list?

edit: thanks for the welcome

You have a very large budget, so you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to getting high end components and making everything color coordinated.  So I'm going to do my best to get you a really nice color coordinated rig, that is powerful from day one, while being upgrade ready.

This is using very high end, luxury components and you're still well under budget.  You could even step up to an i7-4790k if you want.

this list puts me over budget actually, i think you mistook the currency conversion if the final price is in AUD but there are things i could cut the price on, such as RAM i can pick up an $80 single stick of DDR3 1600 8gb kingston hyperx memory, while not as fast as what you have listed it would still serve it's purpose. And water cooling is a bit out of my field of skills, so changing that to a few case fans would also cut the price down significantly.

Apart from the misunderstanding this list is great, thanks for the advice. I hope I can make it up to you one day

Oh you're right, I mistook the USD to AUS.  I haven't slept.

Definitely get a single stick of DDR3 1600 for $80 if you can.  Thats a good deal based on what I saw on PcP.

Skip water cooling and go with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, much less expensive, and still very good.
