upgrade paths...

Go to solution Solved by TheSLSAMG,

what would be the best locked i5??

i am not looking specifically for the cheapest one (the 4450 i belive) but the one with the highest turbo frequency, i will be using the same hyper t4 cooler that i have with my a10

Whichever one is not terribly priced for what it is. If you really want highest frequency, i5 4690.

so i am running my a10 7850k for many months, i finally got the money and got an r9 270x, but now i want to upgrade the CPU

the fm2+ socket doesnt get any better than the athlon 860k, and it is a budget oriented chip.

i thought about getting an AMD fx series becasue they can overclock and are not as expensive as a core i5, while what intel offers at the price of an fx 8000 series are locked multiplyer i5s...

it all looks nice and dandy but my case is microatx, and the only micro atx fm3+ socket boards are rocking an old 700 series chipset, so i went "nonononononono"

so what is the better option??

a z97 board with a G3258 and OC that as much as i can

or another z97 board but with a locked multiplyer i5, i can go with an h97 board or even i b85 board but i want that upgrade path to the k series i5 or i7.

i can also try my luck at doing a base clock overclock.

what does the forum think???

Z97 motherboard, locked i5. Don't BCLK, just keep it stock.

Considering the options in this generation, Intel are unarguably better for gaming. AMD's platform is almost 3 years old, and in that time Intel have taken a nice lead. The G3258 is a terrible choice for the most part, due to games having requirements for more than a dual core. An i3 is a nice budget-based divide, performing slightly better than most FX CPUs while costing as much. Whatever you do, get a Z97 board so you can upgrade to Broadwell in the event that you do.

I would go locked i5 and get a h97 board IMO. The pentium might be a good bang for the buck chip, but it's limited by the fact that it's a dual core. The thing is a lot of programs are beginning to use more than 2 cores so quad core is really gonna start to be a requirement.

Life.exe is missing

are you using onboard graphics at the moment? also what cooler are you running ?

if you disable the chips igp and have a decent cooling you prob could turn up the voltage and stretch it to 4.5

i disabled the igp and have a hyper t4 as cooler, what voltage do you recommend to turning it up to 4.5?
