What exactly is Magic Lantern?

I saw that Canon EOS T3i got raw video...but it seemed to be not on Canon's website...is Magic Lantern some sort of mod/hack for Canon EOS cameras?

Would using something like this be potentially dangerous?

I've personally never used it but, here's a summary of what it is:

 

 

It's a third party OS for the camera, that is loaded from the SD card on which it is situated.

 

It gives you a more enhanced and feature rich experience with the camera.

 

There is, as with any un-official OS, the chance of bricking your camera.

 

 

Check some YouTube videos on magic lantern, there are tons around! :)
