7970 Reference Temperatures

Go to solution Solved by RobertVanGilder,

FIX: The second monitor was the problem. When I took out the cable that connects to the second monitor, the card temps drop almost 20 degrees (They are now around 45).

Thanks everyone for your help

Does anyone know what the normal temps are for a reference 7970?

My idle are about 60 and load 80+. This sucks! I am not comfortable with my GPU running past 80 degrees!

Thanks guys, I just bought the damn card

How many monitors do you have connected to your card. When i have 2 monitors with different resolutions connected the idle temps are about the same as yours. The full load temps are fine, ive reached over 90 degrees before. Its just one of the drawbacks of having a reference card.

I've got one 1080p monitor and a 720p monitor. When I overclock the card to Linus's settings it goes way above 90! Right now it's fucking lagging while playing a YouTube video...I plan on watercooling the card but I still want to make sure that it's ok without taking of the heatsink. Are these temps ok?

Thanks buddy

this is a review on the HIS 7970 but in the results the "AMD 7970" is in it and it coms out at 35oC idle

what are the temps when in benchmark and game

In FirMark the tems are over 85 degrees.. Idle they are about 60+ and even YouTube videos are lagging..

Unless your pushing 90+ you dont really need to worry.

The full load temps are normal. As for the idle temps, when you have 2 monitors connected with different resolutions the card remains in 3d mode iirc. Try disconnecting your second monitor and see if it goes down. If you want to continue to use you can always connect it to your onboard graphics soution.

No problem, i had to do some digging around when i got my 7970s for the same reason :)

Damn, when I take the second monitor off the idle temps fall 15 degrees... Because I don't have an onboard gpu (Running Six Core AMD) I'm just going to settle with the 60 idle, for some time.

thats realy weird cuz ihave dual screens and when they are idle it does up by about 5oC

(HD 7770 not the best comparison)

Your card produces a lot less heat and you got two fans that arent blower style. In fact you most likely have a better cooling solution then the stupid reference design for the 7970.

no shit sherlock

If you have nothing constructive to say then why say it.

The reference design cooler on the 7970 isnt stupid. Its actually quite good for what it is. It is loud but it keeps the card within operating temperatures. Just because something isnt as good as a more expensive option does not make it stupid.

I bet that the engineers that designed it aren't stupid either...These people need to learn to respect these companies and their people a bit more...It takes a lot of work to design and manufacture the blower style fans.

Yeah, the reference design is pretty useless...I do have a waterblock that's dying to be install, but I just wanted to test the card before opening it

I Find the reference design superior to most custom solutions when it comes to multi-gpu, I found it to be hit or miss with 3-4 cards in SLI or XFire with custom coolers, reference design with multi-gpu is just easier to deal with, Sure the blower fans are loud as hell and I get made fun of for my "Jet Takeoff" PC, but when I buy multi-cards the last thing I thinking is quite and the first thing that comes to mind is raw performance at expense of heat, power and noise.
