CPU speed benefits

I am bored and was looking at speeds (Hz) for cpus but whats the benefit of a 2.5GHz vs a 3.5GHz cpu and why are most server cpus have lower GHz then desktop processors? Is the benefit for games 1 or 2 fps difference; does more cpu intensive programs benefit from it also?

Basically yes, since servers handle many things at once.

There are small companies run their own servers that don't need a 12 core monster. Some Xeon are only 4 cores.

Server processors aren't exactly designed for games so they won't exactly offer stellar game performance.

Higher frequency can give you a couple of frames per second, but all of them usually comes from the GPU, so for gaming GPU takes more action in fps delivery than the CPU does. As long as you are not "bottlenecking" your GPU with your CPU.

Mhz is not the only measure of performance.  For instance, AMD advertises very high Mhz and more cores, but it loses out to a 3.0Ghz i5 in gaming because the architecture of the i5 is so much better than that of the FX.

 

Some games do REALLY benefit from higher speeds.  CPU intensive games like MMOs, DayZ, ARMA, Skyrim, Emulators, Indies, etc..

 

Also, if you are wanting to push more than 60Hz, stronger processors are going to help you achieve that goal, but as always, GPU is the most important component in a gaming rig.
