Hello,

Recently I've realized the need in my house for a nas server for backing up drives and the massive media library that we have. So I wanted to know what I should get with 4tb usable in raid 10 array.

Thanks.

Hey Will_Man_Dude,

What is your budget?
You have a couple of options:

-build it yourself for which you would need a basic build with a moderate dual-core CPU, MOBO, 4GB or 8GB or RAM, PSU, Case and a good RAID card (if the mobo doesn't have a good one). And the main part - HDDs and one separate strage drive (HDD or SSD) for the OS. For the drives, I would recommend that you check out WD Red drives as they are designed specifically for NAS/RAID environments, have NASware, TLER and work cool, quiet and are durable for those environments. -Look for a pre-built one that offers all in one solution (desktop and mobile app, different features, support, OS, etc.) I could offer you to check out WD EX4 (since you are looking for a 4-bay NAS). It offers different features including shared and private folders, USB ports, iSCSI support and many other functions. Here's a link: http://goo.gl/yL17lP.

If you decide to build it yourself, you could post your parts here so the community could give you some suggestions and feedback.

It would be cheaper to buy a pre-built one (unless you have computer parts lying around), plus you'll get tech support.

I would go with a two-drive NAS, using two 4TB drives (either Seagate NAS or WD Red) in RAID 1 -- you probably don't need a RAID 10 for media storage. You have a ton of options for the actual NAS, here are a few:

WD MyBook Live Duo (you want the 8TB model, which will give you 4TB in a RAID 1 configuration, comes with the drives)

Seagate Business 2-Bay NAS (again, you want the 8TB model, comes with the drives)

Synology DS 213j (you have to buy your own drives)

OP said that they needed RAID10 which requires at least 4 drives.

I do agree with @wpirobotbuilder that for simple media storage RAID1 would e enough and 2x4TB drives would be a great option. In addition to the WD MyBook Live Duo that was offered, I could also suggest WD My Cloud Mirror which is a home NAS system, preset to RAID1 and offers many features. RAID1 also allows you 1 drive failure without losing your data (RAID10 allows 2 drives to fail) which is enough for home usage.
