I will be picking up an i7 4790k and some sort of z97 motherboard, but my question is will i get better overclocking performance out of a higher end board? The board im looking at right now is the z97-a, purely because it is mention as one of the best budget boards every time i see the name. Will i get better performance out of a different board at a similar price, do i need to spend more?

Also, on the topic of sli, i see that almost every gpu runs at x8/x8 when in sli, so is it important to have more than one x16 slot, or is it just a useless thing that companies promote?

In my opinion the Asrock z97 extreme 6 is a "better" board and it is about the same price as the asus z97 a. Just look up the reviews of the 2 from reputable websites like anandtech and toms hardware, places like that. You will see that the asrock board is clearly the winner at only a few dollars more, i believe you can get it on sale right now for roughly $145 usa

ASrock been putting on decent boards for awhile, and extreme6 has good reviews for it. Hell I plan on getting the extreme6a/c myself since I think I wont need the 2 extra cores of a 5820k x99 like originally planned

1- will i get better overclocking performance out of a higher end board?

2- Will i get better performance out of a different board at a similar price, do i need to spend more?

3-i see that almost every gpu runs at x8/x8 when in sli, so is it important to have more than one x16 slot

1- No

2- No

3- If you wan't to run SLI you need a board with two pcie 3.0 X16 slots, if you insert two video cards they will run at 8x/8x speed due to CPU lane restrictions

and this is perfectly fine it won't impact performance.

Okay but saying that, since they'll only run at x8/x8 why do I need two x16s?
