wemo substitute or compatible software?

Okay so Ive always wanted to control my appliances with my tablet and my phone through wifi, but from what I've gathered recently wemo hardware works just fine, but the software that goes with it is so dysfunctional that the product itself is no longer worth it. So my question is: does anyone know if there are similar products of lightbulbs and sockets that can wirelessly shut off power or does anyone know a third party software that can operate with wemo gear? Thank you in advance to any answers O_o

For those that are curious I actually need some of this in some rooms because the switches only work with certain outlets and the rooms dont have a ceiling light.
