I am not too familiar with this kind of situation. Was wondering if someone could give me some insight. My brother recently build his system using a 5820k and Asus x99-a mobo. My question comes after he was lagging while recording using OBS. I looked into his task manager then under performance and only every other thread seems to be in use. I tried opening up a few internet tabs, a game, a video and obs to see if the threads come alive but they don't seem to. Is this normal?

And he shouldn't even be lagging but I guess one question at a time.

H4X3R: I don't think internet speed matter if you are local recording. Funny thing is that i helped him with the settings a week ago. We go it working perfectly. Any ideas on the threads though? is that normal?

Yes, it is normal. You see, the 5820k only actual has 6 cores. Intel has a technology called hyperthreading, which instead of doing 1 thing per core, it alternate between 2 things. So, you get an effective doubling of the amount of threads. Windows task manager detects threads, not cores, so it see all 12 threads and only 6 are in use. This just means that the system is not utilizing the hyperthreading.

Oh, ok. Thanks for that answer. Still the whole lag issue bothers me. This just happened today but he is lagging on his main monitor if his second monitor is playing a youtube video. Weird. Whats also weird is that obs wont lag if he minimizes it while playing. That doesn't happen to me so its strange.

This is more likely software related than hardware.
