Yes they can interfere and they will interfere, thats why it is best to use Ethernet cable. And no upgrading to 5GZ will do little to help since most devices don't support it yet. To an extend using 5GZ will help but you will still have interference. On your router try to change the wireless channel, on my router i can select from 14 different wireless channels.
Since the Internet is dropping and not the Wifi it most probably due to bad cabling or your lease time on your IP addresses are like 1h or sum, when normally they are 1-3 days. The router could also be fault.
