How long this setup will last?

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

I like to multi-task lol

so 16gb is enough?

Then the saving of alot of money begins

8gb is enough to game and multi-task.

So for gaming/light editing, 8gb is more than enough. For heavy editing, 16gb is plenty.

Not actually a setup somewhat in general

Will this parts last around 1 year at most?

MOBO: ASUS Maximus Hero
CPU: i5 4690K
GPU: R9 290x
It will be 32gb RAM

A lot more than a year. Like 3-5 years at 60fps and very good-ultra settings at 1080p.

Why 32gb of ram....

Depends on what you're doing. Gaming at 1080p? A couple of years. Spreadsheets? Forever.

32GB RAM, unless you're doing video editing, it's not worth it.

Even if he is editing, a 4790k with 16gb of ram would be better than a 4690k with 32gb of ram, and still leave him like $50 left over.

Hell, he could even get a 5820k+16gb of Ram for about the same cost, which would also be much better for editing.

Your views on how long hardware lasts are skewed. The hardware you're listing will be a great spec for 2-3 years. Sure, its not top of the line, but it doesn't matter. What matters is how powerful it is. Hell, 2-3 years from now hardware might only get faster by 10-15%.

I don't know about that.

I started my rig with 8GB and I soon determined that that wasn't enough, as After Effects and Photoshop run much better under environments with more RAM available (I now have 24GB, which is a good sweet spot for price.)

If you aren't using anything like Final Cut Pro X or After Effects then you should be fine with 8GB.
