Tomorrow I`m starting a new project.

I want to convert an old laptop to a NAS.

Uses:

I want to use it as a headless, always on, torrent seeding server.

I`m going to install Nas4free as the OS because it already has a transmission torrent client installed. I will install the OS to a flash drive and connect an external HDD for additional storage because I don't know how big the internal HDD is.

How can I turn off the laptop monitor and leave the system running?

Any other suggestions? Maybe you can think of a better solutions?

I use i5-3470, 8GB kingston, SSD + 2x hdd, GTX 970

The OS probably has an option to turn off the screen after 1 minute of idling or something. If you don't touch it the screen should stay off.

Thanks! Will look for that after the install

In power options, you can set the system to do nothing when you close the lid. That means it won't sleep or hibernate but it'll just turn the screen off.

I ran into some problems. Nas4free and Freenas kept restarting the PC. I tried the 64 or 32 bit versions. After that I just installed Ubuntu and transmission. I control transmission with webgui from my other pc. And share the download folder with samba.

Everything runs fine. I went into the power options and changed everything to "do nothing". When I close the lid I can still use the webgui and up?down loads keep running but when I open the lid the PC seems to be frozen. I can move the mouse and can`t click anything but the webgui on the other PC is responsive but I can not remove torrent files. Adding torrents is fine.

Suggestions?

I'm not sure if I can help you much more. I seem to be a little lost myself.
