Hi,

Im wondering how much performance i can expect to loose when running a VM. I basically want to have a VM run a server and TeamViewer (so that someone can have control of the server while im sleeping). The resources needed for the server is comparable to a minecraft server running about 10 people. Even though i trust the person that will be controlling the server i still want to know what the difference would be.

My desktop will be something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nmD4Jx

though i will probably take off the hdd and add another ssd for raid 0, and i can also add ram if necessary.

Let me know what i should expect in terms of performance and let me know if you have any recommendation for a vitual machine or maybe something to replace the teamviewer if you got anything better.

Thank you in advance for any help and please forgive my noobness im new to this sort of stuff.

What's the hardware you're running? Sorry, your post was rather vague.

I don't know much about VMs, but if it's a Pentium D, I wouldn't want to waste any CPU performance on anything.

I'd suggest SSH for remote-controlling your machine. A SSH will grant you access to the machine as if you were actually there, and can be accessed from a multitude of devices - another PC, your android phone, etc etc.

Remember to be a good citizen and choose a 'best answer' when your problem has been resolved!

(that way people know when a problem's been resolved)

It works great. with the right cpu speed and core and a good amount of RAM, it should be fine. Some companies even use vmware as servers. But I wouldn't trust anyone to control your pc especially while you're asleep :lol:

PC1 = i7 4790k  -  Asus Z97 Mark1  -  Corsair Dominator 32GB kit  -  Evga GTX 780Ti SC x2 SLI  -  SSD 512GB x2  -  12TB NAS  -  Carbide Air540  -  24" 120Hz x2 3D ready  -  Corsair K95 + M95
Custom Watercooling loop with low profile radiators / fans

PC2 = i7 4770k  -  Z97 Maximus VII Hero  -  16 GB kit  -  Evga GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0  -  Graphite 760T  -  24" VE248 x2  -  Corsair K70RGB + M90

haha, thats the whole point why i want to use a VM its so that he only have access to the VM and not my computer. I think i will simply test and find out that way.

Thanks for the help everyone !

Hyper-V is better for Windows environment imo, it's faster, can work in background and has really fast networking (on vmware there was a glitch, I had low transfer rate between vm and host, I now get full gbps with the vm).
