Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know if anyone has actually done real world testing on DDR4 applications in gaming.

By testing, I am referring to in the event that the GPU runs out of VRAM and reverts to your DDR RAM how will it affect the gameplay experience (constantly smooth or choppy) and FPS.

Has anyone tested this yet?

There is actually no real benefit from DDR4 when it comes to gaming. However, my system does feel old as dirt now that DDR4 is out on X99. Must be that upgrade disease I always had. I'll wait til Skylake comes out.

Main: i7 2600 | ASUS P8Z68-V | 2x4GB Vengeance 1600 | GTX 580 | WD Blue 1TB | Antec TP-650C | NH U12S | W7 x64

Backup: X6 1090T | MSI K9A2 Platinum | 4x2GB XMS2 800 | GTX 550Ti | WD Blue 1TB |  Antec VP-450 | CM TX3 | W7 x64

Also Skylake will rely on DDR4 Memory only and will not be able to accept DDR3 or Under.

That's why I said "I'll wait till Skylake" >implying that's when DDR4 will be on the mainstream platform. Your GPU won't run out of VRAM unless you play at some crazy resolution.

Watch this video.

Watch this video.

The video ran tests using 3 screens at 1080p resolution ea. I am interested in resolutions at 3 x 4k UHD settings.

Now games are already starting to use over 4 GB of RAM for example look at Shadow of Mordor, the minimum requirement is 3GB and the Recommended is 8GB of RAM.

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/middle-earth-shadow-of-mordor/12308/?p=r

Now in the video you quoted me Jayz is testing the GPU and VRAM OC speeds which has nothing to do with my query.

I am asking how will DDR4 operate if it needs to be substituted and used alongside with VRAM especially considering how much faster DDR4 is over GDDR5 (And yes I know that GDDR5 is better for gaming because its overall design/architechture is there to support gaming requirements but as I said I want to know how well DDR4 will work in conjunction with GDDR5 when you run out of VRAM when you play at extremely high resolutions.)

From what I understand, the increase clock speeds of DDR4 compared to DDR3 are counteracted some by much higher latencies. Performance is basically a wash between DDR4 and highly clocked DDR3. And that's in actual RAM-sensitive tests.

In games, you're much more likely to hit the limitations of your GPU or CPU before RAM becomes a factor.

You won't get acceptable framerate even if you go and buy 4 titan blacks. It's just not going to happen for now, no matter how much money you spend (unless you have telsas in mind).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Please go on about these telsas. Its the first time I'm hearing about them and I will be wanting to game in 4k so any infromation you can provide will be helpful. Thanks

Well it was pretty much a joke... TESLAs (telsas was a misspelling lol) are gpus used for supercomputing, they are found in supercomputers and machines which have to grind huge workloads all day. They also happen to cost like a car. The titan has the same gpu as the lowest end tesla card (in fact, the titan is not really a gaming card). It doesn't make any sense to get one for gaming.

Gaming at 4k is one thing, and it's perfectly feasible with 2 or 3 sli 970s (they're much better than 980s for the price). Surround 4k is just too much for current gaming gpus, even 4 980s or titan blacks as I said wouldn't be enough to max settings at that resolution. Unless you're willing to compromise on detail settings of course (I am, but someone looking for surround 4k might not be ^^).

You could run 3 screens in 4k but only game on 1 screen. By doing this you wont have to spend heaps on GPUs, buy like 2 gtx 970 if you have the budget. You will be playing the game in 4k and wont have to deal with the stretched views on the side screens. JayzTwoCents made a video about surround gaming, check it out:

4K_SLI_CFX_BF4.png
4 way 290's would likely get 90fps on 4k so at 3x4K you'd get maybe 40fps? 50 on high.
but usually when your run out of vram system ram wont help you. ddr4 2400 quad channel is probably equivilant to 9800gtx bandwidth but with insane latency.

Maybe. But honestly I'm not even sure :P and as I said, they're expensive as a car. You are better off getting 2 970s and one 4k monitor, then in the future upgrade to surround when gaming gpus will be fast enough for it.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
