i was  having hard  deciding  due  to small problem called the future. im a high school senior  and will be  going off the college in next august. due to the  fact tha t i want to be an education major / science  major would i really need  more cores  since  the rig  im building is going to be  my system for  project and other college work as  well as  gaming. so should i go z97 or  x99 price  really doesn't  matter. thanks  fo r all the help so far.

Go for z97, I'd suggest a i5 4690K or i7 4790K.

obviously x99 is the future, but till august is a long way, perhaps new AMD cpu will smash the 8core from intel :) but right now, x99 is the best way to go + future.

But is ok.

Z97 and an i7-4790k is more power than you will need.

Doubt you'd need the 4790K. A Xeon can be a good alternative but no IGP so you have to use a discrete card, I'd rather go with a 4690K. If you like to spend 100$ more for 20-30% performance sure go with the xeon/4790K.

Nah, X99 is the past. Skylake is the future. Also if AMD brings such a cpu out, it won't be 150$ with 50$ mail inrebate.
